Sudan’s PM urges UN to support peace plan
Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in clashes between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which control western and parts of southern Sudan.
The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced millions of people.
Speaking at UN headquarters in New York, Idris emphasized the need for a ceasefire “under joint monitoring by the United Nations, the African Union and the League of Arab states,” alongside the withdrawal of the RSF from all areas it occupies. He also pledged to hold free elections after a transitional period, allowing for “inter-Sudanese dialogue.”
The Sudanese Prime Minister, however, did not meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during his visit, according to a UN spokesperson. In related developments, US President Donald Trump previously expressed readiness to support conflict resolution efforts, with mediation led by the United States and the so-called “Quad,” which includes Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
