Pope Leo XIV Urges Ceasefires in Ukraine, Lebanon, Sudan
In a post on social media platform X, the pope called on the international community to sustain its focus on the wars ravaging Ukraine, Lebanon, and Sudan, urging immediate ceasefires and a return to dialogue.
"May the international community's attention to the tragedy of this war not waver," Pope Leo wrote, also expressing deep solidarity with the Lebanese people, saying he felt "closer than ever" to the country amid the continuing conflict.
The pontiff grounded his appeal in international law, asserting that the principle of humanity carries a binding moral obligation to shield civilians from the horrors of armed conflict.
On Sudan, Pope Leo marked the third anniversary of the war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces — a conflict that has claimed thousands of lives and uprooted millions since it erupted in April 2023 — by calling on all warring factions to "silence their weapons" and enter dialogue without preconditions.
Regarding Ukraine, peace efforts have stalled after Russia, Ukraine, and the US completed three rounds of negotiations earlier this year. Both Moscow and Kyiv have since attributed the halt to Washington's shifting attention toward the war in Iran.
In Lebanon, Israel's large-scale military campaign, which intensified on March 2, has killed at least 2,020 people and wounded 6,436 others.
