Fire in Sudan’s North Darfur Displacement Camp Kills Two People
The blaze erupted Monday in the Hilla Naima district of Tawila, a town situated roughly 37 miles west of El Fasher. The flames rapidly engulfed shelters constructed from basic local materials, destroying dozens of structures and rendering numerous families homeless, as stated by reports.
Among those killed was a 12-year-old child, according to Yahya Ibrahim, a member of the Tawila Emergency Room.
Tawila has increasingly become a sanctuary for civilians escaping violence in and around El Fasher, particularly after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized the city on Oct. 26, 2024. Reports indicate the town is now sheltering approximately 655,000 displaced individuals, many of whom undertook perilous journeys to flee the fighting and seek safety.
Sudanese officials and regional human rights organizations have previously accused the RSF and its ally, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, of carrying out abuses against civilians.
Clashes have recently escalated across the three Kordofan states — North, West, and South — driving tens of thousands more residents from their homes.
Across Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF maintains control over all five states in the Darfur region, with the exception of certain areas in North Darfur that remain under army authority. Meanwhile, the Sudanese army controls the majority of territory in the other 13 states spanning the south, north, east, and central regions, including the capital, Khartoum.
The war between the Sudanese armed forces and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023, has resulted in thousands of deaths and forced millions to flee their homes.
