Turkey, Egypt to Collaborate on Gaza Peace Efforts, Libya Stability
Speaking alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Erdogan said the two countries are jointly pursuing initiatives aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza. “Türkiye is working with Egypt on initiatives to make peace in Gaza possible and will continue these efforts,” he said during a joint press conference.
He added that Ankara and Cairo remain aligned on Libya’s future, emphasizing the importance of keeping the country intact. “Our shared objective with Egypt continues to be the preservation of Libya’s unity and territorial integrity to establish lasting stability in the country,” Erdogan said.
Highlighting the economic dimension of bilateral ties, Erdogan noted that Egypt already stands as Türkiye’s top trading partner on the African continent. He said Ankara intends to significantly expand trade, raising the current volume of roughly $8–9 billion to $15 billion.
The Turkish leader also outlined plans to deepen cooperation with Egypt in several strategic maritime areas. “Türkiye wants to enhance its cooperation with Egypt in the fields of maritime trade and transportation, freedom of navigation, and maritime security,” he said.
Addressing regional political issues, Erdogan reiterated Türkiye’s opposition to Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as a separate entity, stressing the need to safeguard Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
On Sudan, Egypt’s southern neighbor, Erdogan said Ankara is calling for an immediate ceasefire followed by a durable political settlement to restore peace in the country.
Turning to broader regional tensions, Erdogan commented on strained relations between the United States and Iran, stressing the importance of dialogue. “Resolving issues with Iran, including the nuclear issue, through diplomatic means is the most appropriate method," he said.
Regarding Syria, Erdogan said Türkiye backs major political change in the country, arguing that maintaining Syria’s territorial integrity and political unity would benefit the wider region.
He also drew attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, noting that the suffering of civilians continues despite a ceasefire that has been in place for months. Erdogan praised Egypt’s role in facilitating the delivery of humanitarian assistance sent by Türkiye to Palestinians in Gaza, according to statements made at the meeting.
