Sudan orders release of four hundred women from Omdurman Women’s Prison
The announcement followed Burhan’s inspection of the Omdurman facility, located west of the capital, Khartoum.
In a statement on the social media platform X, Burhan said he had ordered the “immediate release of 400 inmates, including mothers detained with their children,” and added that all financial penalties associated with public-rights cases would be canceled.
He further stated that he directed authorities to “reclassify cases legally and review the justice system for detainees accused of cooperating with the RSF in order to speed up litigation procedures and ensure their rights.”
Burhan emphasized that a full review of legal processes and the judicial framework had been initiated “to mitigate the impact of the conflict and ensure the application of the rule of law, while taking into account the exceptional circumstances the country is going through.”
Sudan has been embroiled in a violent struggle between its army and the RSF since April 2023, resulting in thousands of deaths and displacing millions.
Currently, the RSF controls nearly all five states in the Darfur region, except for some northern areas in North Darfur that remain under army control. The Sudanese army maintains authority over most of the other 13 states across southern, northern, eastern, and central Sudan, including the capital, Khartoum.
